Abstract: 0Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) can improve the quality of life for people with complex communication needs; however, AAC use in schools is often limited. The current study investigated the effect of an AAC training package on paraprofessionals' use of a speech-generating device and an Autistic student's communication in a public school. Using a multiple-baseline design, three female paraprofessionals took part in a behavioral consultation process which used behavioral skills training and continuous performance feedback to teach language modeling on an AAC device. Based on effect size calculations, the results indicated the training had a large effect on the paraprofessionals' use of the device and a moderate to large effect on the student's overall language use (i.e. vocal and using AAC device). High acceptability of the consultative process and chosen intervention was reported by the paraprofessionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
