Abstract: The article highlights the evolution of funk from earlier genres of Black music and reflects on music group Parliament's concept of Mothership that was linked with marronage, exile and sky piracy. Topics discussed include Black airplane hijackings and the story of Charles Hill and his fellow sky pirates and how it demonstrates the condition of exile portending from hijacking the Mothership.
