Abstract: This article focuses on a study identifying seven distinct types of hyper-arousal, a symptom reported across various mental disorders such as insomnia, PTSD, ADHD, anxiety disorders, and Major Depressive Disorder. Researchers at the Netherlands Institute of Neuroscience developed a comprehensive questionnaire by consolidating 221 items from existing measures and surveyed 467 adults with diverse psychiatric diagnoses. The seven types of hyper-arousal identified include anxious, somatic, sensitive, sleep-related, irritable, vigilant, and sudomotor hyper-arousal, each characterized by specific emotional or physiological symptoms. The team also created a concise 27-item Transdiagnostic Hyperarousal Dimensions Questionnaire (THDQ) to assess these types, aiming to enhance understanding of hyper-arousal’s role across mental health conditions and its neural correlates.
