| Abstract: | The article presents a study which examines the predictive value of serum magnesium concentration in the treatment of psychiatric patients. It highlights the relationship of the effect of the concentration to various diagnostic procedures and seasons. Two hundred thirteen depressive and manic in-patients and out-patients were given an electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Before the treatment, the patient's serum magnesium concentration was taken. The result shows that the concentration were low during the pre-ECT procedure while it was normal or raised after ECT. It is stated that this phenomenon was due to the seasonal variation throughout the year. |
