Abstract: The article presents a study which examined the effectiveness of independent reading through electronic text compact disc (CD) read-only memory (ROM) storybooks for measuring comprehension with oral retellings. The CD-ROM storybooks helps improve the comprehension of children by providing a multisensory features such as audio support, animations, and video clips that add meaning which are not found in the traditional texts. The traditional print texts rely mostly on the reader's internal strategies to activate prior knowledge while the CD-ROM storybooks provides an interaction between the reader and the text. Moreover, electronic texts have the possibility of enhancing comprehension for students who are struggling to acquire the necessary skills for reading.
