Abstract: The article discusses the challenge of acute and chronic non-communicable diseases in South Africa and provides recommendations to deal with the burden. The increasing burden of non-communicable diseases is indicated by a growing number of deaths from diabetes, cancer of the prostate, chronic kidney disease and cancer of the cervix. According to the authors, a national initiative to establish sites of service excellence in urban and rural settings is needed to respond to the burden of non-communicable diseases.
