| Abstract: | The article presents information on the results of two experiments aimed at determining the extent of voluntary control of penile response of homosexual pedophile exposed to pedophilic and nonpedophilic sexual stimuli. Phallometry is a method currently used to assess sexual preferences of pedophiles. This method consists of recording the penile responses of a man during the presentation of deviant and non-deviant sexual stimuli using slides or audiotapes. The slides portray nude adults or children of both genders, therefore permitting assessment of the pedophile's sexual preferences as to age and gender of the victim. The men who participated in the studies cited previously reported that their voluntary controls were mainly achieved with the use of cognitive strategies. To prevent voluntary control because of the use of undetectable cognitive strategies, it is necessary to assure that the man being tested concentrate on the stimuli. To achieve this goal, some researchers have used a detection task that consists of pushing a button during brief flashes of light appearing on the screen where the stimuli were presented. |
