| Abstract: | The article presents the views of several teachers in the U.S. regarding the noncanonical texts they use in teaching. According to Julie Faith Faulkner of Polk County High School in Benton, Tennessee, the memoir, "The Children of Willesden Lane: Beyond the Kinder-transport: A Memoir of Music, Love, and Survival" would be perfect for her language arts students. Walker Jackson of Kinnelon High School in New Jersey says the book "Morality Play," by Barry Unsworth is didactic for the ways by which the author creates harbingers of the modern era. Greg Thompson of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia says that Salman Rushdie's "Haroun and the Sea of Stories" offers teachers with an opportunity to explore differences in freedom of speech between American and Islamic countries. |
