| Abstract (English): | In this article, we analyze the status of Mayan children's traditional knowledge and practices within the conservationist framework of birdwatching programs in Yucatán. We identify the influence of these programs on traditional knowledge; however, the children demonstrate the ability to decide which Western knowledge to incorporate and which to resist in favor of their own knowledge system. Traditional practices (e.g., hunting, trapping) serve as settings for learning and identity, thereby establishing Yucatecan Mayan children as bearers, generators, and transmitters of traditional knowledge within their community contexts. | Abstract (Spanish): | En este artículo analizamos la situación actual de los saberes y prácticas tradicionales de la niñez maya, situándolos en el marco de conservación de los programas de observación de aves en Yucatán. Identificamos que dichos programas influyen en los saberes tradicionales, no obstante, las infancias muestran capacidad de decidir qué conocimientos occidentales incluir y ante cuáles resistir en favor de su sistema de saberes. Las prácticas tradicionales (p. ej. cacería, captura) se conforman como escenarios de aprendizaje e identidad. De esta forma, la niñez maya yucateca se establece como portadora, generadora y transmisora de saberes tradicionales en sus contextos comunitarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
