Summary:Language Didactics is defined as an area where language instruction and learning processes interact. On the basis of this definition, first, the so called language didactics� �applicationist conceptions� are reviewed. In view of the growing complexity of disciplines involved in studying these processes, the interrelationships between different disciplines, and the specificity of some research work on language teaching and learning aimed at improving language teaching, make it possible to raise the issue of the specificity of Language Didactics, together with the need to further develop a theory of didactic action and research methodology that fit with this kind of analysis.
