Summary:: This paper focuses on what training college journalism students should acquire, depending on the type of activity that is considered most appropriate for a democratic society. Some indication of the curriculum are provided from reference documents of UNESCO, in search of a curriculum, some contents and some methodologies that respond to the great challenges of the present without forgetting the best legacy of the past. Similarly, the evolution experienced by the formal training of journalists in Spain is reviewed. And the main progress achieved by the Communication Sciences within the Spanish university from the seventies to the present, in full validity of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) are exposed.
