description The teaching of industrial engineering in a systematic way was started in Spain in 1850 by the so-called Seijas Lozano decree. Until then, the discipline had been taught in no uniform manner by various bodies and associations. The decree established three levels: elementary, which was taught at some secondary education institutes; furthering, which was pursued at the news Industrial Schools of Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Vergara; and advanced, which was only taught at the Royal Institute of Madrid. However, the teaching and administrative framework underwent virtually continuous changes, particularly over the period 1857-1860, when the industrial schools of Barcelona, Seville and Vergara became advanced schools at those of Gijón and Valencia were founded. Funding scarcity and the small number of students attending courses led to the dissapearance of all the industrial schools -that of Barcelona excepted- and the Royal Institute of Madrid between 1860 and 1867. This paper reviews the time course of industrial teaching in Spain from 1850 to 1868 and presents a comprehensive study on the Industrial School of Seville between 1850-1866, a period where it attained a good teaching level as it posssessed adequate staff and material resources. After its closure, advanced industrial engineering studies were unavailable in Andalusia for one hundred years.
