| Summary: | The medieval Quadrivium and later classifications of branches of knowledge distinguished between theoretical and practical geometry. Theoretical geometry, which attained its knowledge sola mentis speculatione, consisted exclusively of the study of the Euclidean Elements available in Latin with proofs since the 12th century. Practical geometry was considered as ars bene metiendi and was identified with surveying and the use of particular instruments. Some texts dedicated to practical geometry were seen as a series of rules for the use of these instruments. This article presents the geometry of the late Gothic masons, commenting on two booklets by Matthäus Roriczer and their essential characteristics and comparing them with the theoretical tradition. |
