The object of the present work is to approach this analysis from the arguments given to the public opinion by different physicians.
We have studied a series of letters published in the daily press in the controversy between Benito Closa, a physician of Murcia of recognized local prestige, and Tomas Maestre, who later introduced Legal Medicine in the Spanish University. The differences between both authors correspond to different pathogenic conceptions of the illness. The first is identified with the physiopathologic mentality, and the second with the etiopathologic doctrines. Tomas Maestre proposed an etiologic and aggressive treatment which aimed at eliminating the microorganism from the blood; on the other hand, Closa defended a symptomatic treatment. Besides these scientific differences, in the root of the confrontation are probably ideological differences (both authors entered in politics with conservative and liberal positions respectively), as well as Maestre's intention to egain local prestige in order to obtain a post in the public health structure. |
