Although unaware of such a phenomenon, men have used from time immemorial first fungi and bacteria, later on, for this purpose. Antibiotics did not find eventually a clinical application until the discovery of penicillin, a substance that meant the passage from the antibacterial to antiinfectious activity and hence the dawn of the era of antibiotics therapy, the efficacy of which has completely proved.
Despite the fact of being a therapeutical approach with an ecological basis, the antibiotic therapy entails, as it has been experienced during the last 50 years, the risk of altering the natural equlibrium between microorganisms as well as the appearance of resistances whose future consequences are hardly foreseeable. Therefore, ecological principles should be taken into account in the use of antibiotics. |
