| Summary: | In the 19th century, the theory of climate played a very important role in the geologic research and, especially, in the geologic system of Charles Lyell. This paper aims to answer some questions such as:
a) The substantivation of the principle of uniformity and its relationship to the history of the animal and vegetal life on Earth, was responsible for some drawbacks in Lyell's system and how did such principle influence on the cyclical notion of climatic change?
b) Since somehow later, Lyell abandoned this climate theory and assumed the directional notion of the climate, how did this new theory connect with the Methodologic uniformitarianism? How did the climate theory contribute to build a modern and empirical Geological Science?
The purpose of this paper is to help in understanding two important points: first, regards the Lyell's idea about the History of Earth; second, how the theory of climate is related to the principle of uniformity [in both its methodologic and substantive acceptions] |
