Summary:The Escuela (Special School) of Gijón was founded in 1845 from human and material resources of the Real Instituto Asturiano. In addition to previously existing mathematics and naval studies, the School planned to provide special subjects aimed at training technicians for mining ad the incipient industry in the region. However, the scarcity of resources prevented effective delivery of these studies. In 1855, the School, by then called Escuela Industrial, became an integral part of elementary industrial teaching providers. The following year, with the arrival of new teachers, it began teaching intermediate levels as well. After 1857-58, the new legislation converted intermediate schools, which had also been established in Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Vergara and Gijón, into higher schools. Their running costs were shared by the national government, and provincial and local councils. Budgetary constraints prevented the Schools at Gijón to continue to teach the higher level. Industrial subjects were discontinued in 1860, after which only naval studies were provided. In 1862, an institute was created within the School that taught elementary industrial curricula and the baccalaureate. Thoughout its life, the School was short on resources. Its teaching staff was also insufficient and markedly endogamous. In fact, the teachers were mostly former students of the School, except in the period from 1856 to 1860. Based on previously unpublished facts contained in the Archivo General de la Adminis¿tración (General Archive of the Spanish Administration), this paper describes specific details of developments at the Escuela Especial of Gijón over a 15-year period (1845-60), with emphasis on its features and the teaching and material levels it reached
