| Summary: | The Spanish matematician José Isidoro Morales Rodríguez (1758-1827) read in a French newspaper how the Institut National de France chose its members by ranking the candidates according to their merits. The advantages of this method, nowadays called Borda rule, motivated a resolute apology published in 1797 by Morales in a Memoria Matemática sobre el Cálculo de la Opinion en las Elecciones, which was completed in 1805 with an Apéndice. In this paper we study Morales' worthy contributions to an incipient Social Choice Theory in their scientific and historical context, and his biography is outlined as a remarkable personality of the Enlightenment. |
