Nevertheless, the naturalist Domingo Bello y Spinosa can be considered as the main Spanish botanist of 19th century, who was in charge of the study of vegetation of the above mentioned island for thirty years.
In 1853, the forestry service in Puerto Rico and Cuba was set up, and the first forestry experts, who had just left the newly-made Special School Forestry Experts in Montes of Villaviciosa de Odón (1847), were sent there.
The most outstanding works fulfilled in Puerto Rico were those of J. Fernández Ledón, C. Guillerna de las Heras and M. Bosch y Juliá.
