| Summary: | Devoted to the solution of the problem of flying, in 1906 Torres Quevedo patents a new system of autorigid dirigeable balloon. Once he had built several models in Spain, D. Leonardo sold his patent to a French company: Astra. The french Army acquiered several units, which were succesfully used during the First World War in coastal patrol and sea watch for submarines.
In this paper Torresquevedian creations are studied in the global frame of British Aeronautics: building companies, main features of the airships built in the Torres Quevedo system, activities, commercial relationships with the Spanish inventor, etc. Not only usual bibliographical references are used (national and international books and journals), but also unpublished documents found in archives contribute to clarify the subject. |
