steps, going from an �etic� knowledge to an �emic� one, focusing on the �emic� internalization by
means of checking theories and research reports related to the existence of one or two linguistic
information processing storage places in bilinguals and considering as well a third and intermediate
approach. He explains that from the mid 60s a reaction began against the poor and deficient image that
had been the norm of picturing bilingual people and puts all together into three groups the criterion,
hypothesis and explanations that have been used to defend the positive relationship between
bilingualism and cognitive development, reviewing as well some representative studies. The author
finishes stating his reservations to join the general euphoria about the cognitive manifestations of
bilingualism, as he observes several limitations in such research work. |
