neuroleptics. Half of the 24 families were ramdomly asignated to a rutine external check-up and the
other had a social intervention package, consisted of an educational program on schizophrenia, a
family group and family sessions for relatives and patients. The relapse rate in the control group was
50% compared to 9% of the experimental group (P=0,04). The objectives of the interventions were
achieved in 73% of the experimental families, which had no relapsing patients. Results highlight the
causal role played by the expressed emotions of relatives in the schizophrenic patients� relapse, as
well as the therapeutical effectiveness of the social intervention combined with the pharmacological
treatment. |
