| Summary: | Bem reflects in this interview on the relation between her scientific contributions -the
psychological study of sexual roles both on an instrumental and conceptual level-, and her personal
engagement in favour of more egalitarian relationships between people. She offers a comprehensive
view of her personal and professional evolution and the most interesting issues of the period she
studied androgyny (1974-1979) and of her present cognitive approach. After speaking about her
training and scientific evolution and the motivations that inspired her work, the author analyses
critically the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI). Then, she goes into some aspects of the androgyny
concept, which she coined, and explains the reasons why from 1979 onwards, those subjects sexually
typified become the target of her theory about the cognitive schema of the gender, as well as the
characterization of the masculinity/femininity concepts as cognitive constructs |
