However, the fact that the criteria normally used for perception comes from the reports of the
subjects, together with recent experimental evidence which reveals that masking does not interrupt
the perceptual process in itself but simply avoids the conscious experience of the perceived stimulus,
forces a distinction between perception and conscious experience on one side, and the subsequent use
of masking as a technique for analyzing early perception, on the other. The present paper reviews and
discusses recent work in the area. |
