| Summary: | Abstract: Atmospherics emissions can be generated in different ways that affect human health, among the most important pollutants that are continuously monitored concern sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon dioxide, however control methods depend on the economic resources company and technological viability of the country. An additional factor is the lack of knowledge regarding chemical or biological treatment options, being the latter important as a “green” alternative in relation to air pollutants management. This report aims to disseminate basic knowledge on the functionality of biofiltration systems for gas emissions with environmental contaminants. Therefore, literature search was performed in order to structure the advantages, disadvantages and applications of biofiltration systems. It was shown that the temperature (30 ± 10 °C), relative humidity (≈40 %), filter material and microorganisms of these biofiltration systems are essential to their efficiency, thus being useful for different pollutants generated by a variety of industries mainly by the low water requirement for their operation, even though they have not been positioned commercially in Colombia could be an economical, eco-friendly and efficient tool for the treatment of atmospherics pollutants. It was concluded that biological treatment systems offer a wide variety of economical and ecological solutions for many greenhouse gas emissions and they seek to position themselves in the country with the help of research and implementation as one of the leading technologies for the treatment of atmospherics emissions. |
