Summary:The document tries to approach the evolution the educational process has had from distance to virtual training in education institutions and which are the trends this modality of education follows today. The relation between technology and virtual education is established as highly related aspects. In addition, the topic of the present and future of virtual education is approached as an element addition with which one tries to reduce inequality, social exclusion and illiteracy, and the role of universities in virtual education, which has demonstrated an exponential growth in Colombia since 2011. One seeks an answer to the question: Is virtual education an option to reduce inequality in education?
