description Wastewater treatment is one of the greatest challenges for men today; one of the solutions has been the use of aquatic macrophytes, a cost-effective biotechnological application that avoids the use of chemicals or other expensive technologies, and that is also environmentally friendly. With this research, an interconnected microcosm was developed as a prototype for phytoremediation processes at laboratory scale. For design and construction, two important elements were taken into account; the first one related to a preliminary botanical inventory in some lentic ecosystems present in the city of Neiva, with the purpose of knowing the existing specimens; as a second element, and taking into account the taxa collected, a brainstorming session was carried out, analyzing in each proposal the habitat, light, temperature, space and substrate requirements. 22 species of aquatic macrophytes were identified, Eleocharis sp., Najas wrightiana and Eichhornia crassipes were selected; in terms of design, 34 ideas were proposed, selecting a proposal formed by 3 modules related to 3 growth habits (floating, submerged and emerging). The modular prototype was adapted to the characteristics of the 3 selected species, taking into account their growth habits.
