Pirarucu (Kalanchoe pinnata), is a plant species traditionally used by indigenous communities in the colombian Amazon as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and restorative tonic. The potential for innovation in natural products has great opportunities in bioprospecting these native species. This article reviews innovation opportunities in the market of phytotherapeutic products, by presenting research regards to therapeutic potential of Pirarucu Amazon plant, as well as the evolution of research and technological development in transdermal therapeutic systems, a pharmaceutical technology that enhance the therapeutic performance. Remarkable publications are reviewed, as well as the leading countries, institutions and researchers according to the scientometric analysis of scientific publications.
