description This reflection article addresses the state of integration in Latin America and the most relevant features of its insertion into the global economy. It highlights the region's over-reliance on commodities, such as those in extractive industries and the lack of valueadded industries, hooked on the upper links of global value chains. In addition, the problems of institutionality, corruption and erosion of democracy have ideologically and politically divided the countries of the region, with significant differences, with regard to the power of the State in the management of economic affairs and freedoms. It is concluded that the integration results in Latin America are quite discouraging, debating between open regionalism, post-liberal regionalism and strategic regionalism. Given this, integration needs to be relaunched to energize economies, combat poverty and strengthen institutionality and democracy.
