description Bovine mastitis is an infectious-contagious disease of the mammary gland that produces inflammation in response to invasion through the nipple canal by different types ofbacteria. One of the infectious pathogens that induces the most severe mastitis in cowsis Staphylococcus aureus, responsible for more than 90% of clinical and subclinicalcases. This gram-positive bacteria is difficult to control due to the absence of GoodLivestock Practices BPG on some farms. This article presents the results of a project inwhich the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus was calculated by the PCR method in150 cows with clinical manifestations, belonging to four cattle herds specialized in dairyin the municipality of Campoalegre-Huila. The prevalence result yielded 129 positivecases for the bacteria, that is, 86% of the total sample. The article concludes that thetimely identification of the bacteria in livestock farms allows treatment of mastitis intime, with the specific antibiotic for the pathogen, achieving a decrease in the diseaseand increasing the quality and quantity of milk.
