description The agricultural expansion of traditional crops through monocultures are causing unsustainablepractices, deteriorating the quality of soils and reducing crop yields. This research carried out asustainability analysis on the Canna edulis Ker (Achira) species as a production alternative in marginalcoffee areas, using the Municipality of Garzón - Huila as a case study. It developed Asemi-quantitative survey, and it applied to the different actors of the achira production chain toevaluate aspects of the production system. It found a use of the Canna edulis ker species in largepart of the identified lands and that the purple variety (93.3%) is the most cultivated. Those who sowin marginal areas and carry out organic fertilization (63%) obtained an average of 2898 kg per hectare. The Canna edulis ker species has great potential in using mixed crops, especially in marginal areas, since this species has a high potential to preserve soils, retain moisture and control weeds
