description He increasing public awareness of solar safety has driven the use of active ingredients functioning as sunscreen filters in personal care products. However, the rising consumer interest in natural and eco-friendly cosmetics has posed a challenge to the chemical industry: to develop sunscreens that pose no risks to human health nor are toxic to the environment. The aim of this review is to identify thematic lines related to sunscreens and UV filters before and after the enactment of the latest FDA regulations. Scientific articles published in indexed journals over the past decade were analyzed. The review results highlighted that the literature focuses on five main areas: protective efficacy, skin conditions, and skin cancer associated with solar exposure, photosynthesis processes, antioxidants, and ingredients acting as sunscreen filters. Additionally, it is noted that the publication of the current FDA regulations has spurred the search for solutions to enhance the major commercial organic filters and develop natural sunscreens. The latter must be broad-spectrum, light-stable, and environmentally friendly.
