description Introduction: Globally, anxiety and depression disorders are the most common among young and adult populations, with a high prevalence among higher education students. Objective: To estimate the frequency and factors related to anxiety and depression symptoms in students of technical and technological programs at the Center for Electricity and Industrial Automation of SENA in 2019. Method: Retrospective descriptive observational study. Sociodemographic, academic, and family variables were evaluated. Additionally, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale DASS 21 was used, and the data were analyzed with Stata16TM. Results: The prevalence of anxiety symptoms was 23% and depression symptoms was 12.1%. The variables that independently explain anxiety were: Age OR: 1.04 (95% CI: 1.00 – 1.07), female gender OR: 1.67 (95% CI: 1.08 – 2.58), playing video games OR: 1.54 (95% CI: 1.03 – 2.32); as protective factors, having children OR: 0.31 (95% CI: 0.16 – 0.60), and working as a source of economic support OR: 0.43 (95% CI: 0.24 – 0.74). For depression: female gender OR: 2.20 (95% CI: 1.29 – 3.75), sexual orientation (pansexual, demisexual, asexual) OR: 4.43 (95% CI: 1.89 – 10.4), and as a protective factor, working as a source of economic support OR: 0.24 (95% CI: 0.11 – 0.52). Discussion and Conclusion: Anxiety and depression disorders are prevalent among students; therefore, it is necessary to develop strategies for early identification and psychosocial intervention, promote spaces to develop specific skills and talents such as sports, arts, yoga, among others, with a differential approach positively impacting their mental health.
