Abstract: This article provides a deep understanding of science and mathematics education reform principles. Science and mathematics education reform in the U.S. is premised on the principle of alignment. At the most obvious levels, this includes alignment of standards with state curriculum frameworks, curriculum materials used in classrooms, instructional methods, and formal assessments. Teachers may also understand that traditional approaches to instruction do not result in the types of thinking and process skills required by some sets of state standards.
