Abstract (English): The need to characterize the proposed model as an Academic-Investigative Think Tank (TT-AI) in Mexico arises from a preexisting information gap. The research was carried out in two phases: a documentary one (an ideal frame of reference to collate potential findings) and another for field work (data collection using interviews), which together made it possible to develop a qualitative overview of the present moment of these institutions. The sample was determined with elements conditioned to the fulfillment of three specific criteria: to appear in specialized databases in think tanks, systematic development of research projects about public policy and the impartation of formal academic programs of higher education, which produced a group of thirteen participating entities. The main findings were: identification of a non-legitimized alternative educational model, privileged status in which these institutions operate, search for excellence through human resources and infrastructure that is difficult to achieve by conventional universities.
