| Abstract: | This article describes a first-grade lesson on waves and their application in technologies, a concept that can be challenging to teach in a way that is accessible for young students. A public-school STEM teacher and university professor partnered together to design a meaningful 5E lesson that was grounded in a local phenomenon: the regional airport has lost radio capabilities and now we need to find a way to communicate safely to pilots trying to land their planes.
