Abstract (English):	This article presents a teaching intervention based on prior research into Charles Dickens (1812-1870) carried out in a specific context: the British cultural legacy in the province of Huelva and the Portuguese Alentejo from the second half of the 19th century to the 20th. During the second half of the 19th century, British settlements were developed in the south of the Iberian Peninsula connected to mining enterprises, such as Mason & Barry in Mina de São Domingos in Portugal (1858-1966) and The Rio Tinto Company in Huelva, Spain (1873-1954). These settlements hosted libraries established by these British communities from the very beginning of their presence in these corners of the British Empire: the libraries of the English Club of Rio Tinto (Spain) and the Amélia Library (Portugal). They show not only the importance that reading had acquired in the Victorian society but also the relevance that reading habits and libraries had reached in the United Kingdom since the second half of the 19th century. The existence of these libraries allows us to develop a meaningful learning process of the English language through its own culture--the British culture--and a specific historical period--the Victorian era--bridging a doble distance in time and space. It can be defined as the study of an international cultural moment in an extremely local setting. Through an interdisciplinary methodology that promotes linguistic, digital, and plurilingual competencies, the aim is to apply the research findings in a didactic proposal that enhances the teaching-learning process of English not only as a means of communication but also as a literary and cultural medium. This didactic approach, along with its results, is described for a group of high school students from an educational center located near these libraries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish):	El presente artículo expone una intervención didáctica fundamentada en una investigación previa sobre Charles Dickens (1812-1870) llevada a cabo en un contexto determinado: el legado cultural británico de la provincia de Huelva y del Alentejo portugués desde finales del siglo XIX a principios del XX. Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX se desarrollaron asentamientos británicos en el sur de la Península Ibérica en empresas mineras, como Mason & Barry en Minas de Santo Domingo en Portugal (1858-1966) y The Rio Tinto Company en Huelva (1873-1954). En estos se ubicaron unas bibliotecas que estas comunidades británicas fundaron desde sus primeros momentos en estos rincones del Imperio Británico: las bibliotecas del English Club of Rio Tinto (España) y la biblioteca Amélia (Portugal). Se trata de un signo que refleja la importancia que la lectura había adquirido para la sociedad victoriana. Además, también evidencia el grado de desarrollo que tanto el hábito lector como las bibliotecas habían experimentado desde la segunda mitad del siglo XIX en el Reino Unido. La existencia de estas bibliotecas nos permite desarrollar un aprendizaje significativo de la Lengua Extranjera, Inglés, a través de su cultura, la británica, y de otro momento histórico, la época victoriana, salvando la doble distancia del tiempo y espacio. Se podría definir como el estudio de un momento cultural internacional en un entorno extremadamente local. Se aplica una metodología interdisciplinar que fomente las competencias lingüística, digital y plurilingüe. De esta manera se emplean los datos de la investigación en una propuesta didáctica que favorezca el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje del inglés no solo como instrumento de comunicación sino también como medio literario y cultural. Se describe este planteamiento didáctico, junto con sus resultados, para un grupo de Bachillerato de un centro educativo que se halla en el entorno de la ubicación de estas bibliotecas.
