Abstract (English): Language, as one of the considerable means of identity construction, plays a key role in shaping ethnic identity. Under the wave of globalization, the environment of ethnic languages is continuously deteriorating with the wide spread of international common languages, weakening the ethnolinguistic vitality and posing a potential threat to the realization of ethnic identity. Based on the framework of structural analysis of ethnolinguistic vitality, this paper evaluates the overall language vitality of Tongan in four dimensions: demography, language status, education, and linguistic ecology. Furthermore, this paper delves into the correlation between ethnolinguistic vitality and ethnic identity. The study finds that Tongan is high in demography, low-medium in language status, medium-high in education, and low-medium in linguistic ecology, and its comprehensive vitality stays at a medium level. It is observed that ethnolinguistic vitality and ethnic identity are interactive. Ethnolinguistic vitality, on the one hand, has an impact on ethnic identity through the shaping of ways of thinking, the reinforcement of collective self-identification, social interaction, and cultural inheritance. On the other hand, ethnic identity also affects ethnolinguistic vitality by influencing language's inheritance, usage, status and influence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
