Abstract: The interpreter-based, high level programming language Scilab was used to develop a courseware for studying Finite Element Method (FEM). The courseware enables to solve problems of linear, two-dimensional elasticity. It is designated for semi-interactive learning where student is able not only to define a problem to be solved but also to modify the programme and view any phase of computations and any variable values. The commands for matrix calculations offered by Scilab were used to simplify the computing. The programme allows to calculate the nodal displacements, strain and stress values in element centroids and has been equipped with proper plotting functions. Based on the programme developed a didactic sequence is proposed aimed at learning of FEM fundamentals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
