The article presents an overview of the influence and benefits of "Friends" societies on public library finances. Details are given describing the popularity and effectiveness of Friends-of-the-Library style organizations within the United States, particularly when given official non-profit status. Several fundraising activities supported by these groups are described, including both traditional and online book sales and authors' receptions. Potential challenges in relations between the management of public libraries and friends groups are described and suggestions are given towards the fostering of mutual goal setting. |
