Abstract: In this article the authors discuss aspects of "The Wire," a television crime drama that was widely praised for its depiction of inner city life in Baltimore, Maryland. The authors suggest that the portrait of the community contained in the program was inaccurate, citing instances in the actual life of the city that contradicted the presentation on screen. While praising some of the artistry of "The Wire," the authors fault the creator of the show, David Simon, with confirming the popularly held notion that inner city life is rife with drug crime and that African Americans are helpless victims of economic inequality.
