Abstract: The article discusses the issues concerning urban teaching. It states that a group of teacher educator at a suburban college decided to address the issue by creating an urban teaching group. It explores the experience of these teacher educators in participating the community mapping in which they were assigned to inner-city elementary classrooms. It also examines the realities of teaching in an urban seating. It notes that a teacher education program is effective when it attempts to bridge the gap between what pre-service teachers know and what they need to know about ethnic, racial and socio-economic diversity.
