The article discusses remedial college education, with particular focus given to the author's argument that it is necessary and valuable in spite of high failure rates. A remedial English class at a community college is described, and the author's experiences with remedial students are examined. The challenges faced by remedial students including poor elementary and secondary educations, difficult socioeconomic circumstances, and lack of preparation for a college environment are also commented on. |
