Abstract: A literary criticism discusses documentary texts on the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, particularly the 1941 book "12 Million Black Voices" by Richard Wright and the 1943 book "New World A-Coming" by Roi Ottley. It examines these works as intertexts of guidebooks to New York City produced by the Federal Writers' Project (FWP), a New Deal program. The author explores spatial representation, the identification of Harlem as a ghetto, and relationships between folk cultural and national community.
