The article focuses on the rules regarding sodomy and masturbation in the American Navy during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The author explains that the "Rules for the Regulation of the Navy of the United Colonies of North-America" was drafted by John Adams and modeled after that of the British Royal Navy, explores why Adams might have omitted the mandatory death sentence for those committing sodomy, and examines cases of those who faced courts-martial for sodomy during this time. |
