Abstract: The article presents the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), a critique and manifesto formulated during the meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology in December 2012 which critiques research assessment tools, particularly, the Journal Impact Factor, and its use for deciding on hiring, promotion and grants to researchers. It discusses the role of academic librarians in DORA's recommendation to include metrics beyond the JIF.
