Abstract: The article proposes the integration of distinct learning goals to independent reading times in classroom literacy instruction to promote student motivation. An overview of research regarding independent reading and student achievement is given. Guidelines are then provided outlining how to establish goals in reading comprehension exercises so students can effectively improve. Suggestions for engaging fiction and nonfiction texts differently are also included.
