Abstract: In this book, the author suggests that to truly learn, students should be puzzled about new knowledge. Question-finding, the unique strategy described in the book, fosters this learning by leading adolescent students to probe the multiple meanings of text and ask challenging, open-ended questions. Focus units illustrate how teachers can use question-finding across the curriculum. In each chapter, the author encourages you to "pause and ponder" and "ponder and practice" to reinforce and apply the question-finding concepts. Other practical tools include: (1) An annotated list of materials and resources that stimulate question-finding; (2) A sample lesson plan that demonstrates the strategy; and (3) A glossary of important concepts and specialized terms that help you understand the question-finding process. Teachers can use this resource to motivate and engage your students and help them become independent readers and inquirers. Following a preface, this book presents the following chapters: (1) The Cognitive-Based Literacy Dimension of Question-Finding; (2) Question-Finding and Motivation; (3) Question-Finding and Critical Literacy; (4) Question-Finding and Social Practices of Literacy; (5) Question-Finding and Conceptual Change. A conclusion precedes the following appendixes: (1) Selected Materials and Resources That Foster Question-Finding; (2) Question-Finding Template and Sample Question-Finding Lesson Plan; (3) Everyday Motivational Sources for Question-Finding; and (4) Selected Quotations Related to the Question-Finding Process. A glossary; list of references; and an index are also included.
