| Abstract: |
If we could survey academic chief executive search committees across higher education, a composite definition of reference checking would likely include verification of factual information such as dates of employment, job titles, and responsibilities, as well as an evaluation of successful performance and leadership skills. Although everyone would acknowledge the importance of these objective and subjective measurements, it's also important to consider when and how the background check is conducted. In this article, the author discusses the advantages of using professional reference checking consultants when performing "off-list" reference checks on search finalists in order to ensure that the search committee and governing board has complete and reliable information on which to base identification and selection of successful candidates. |
