| Abstract: | Rising housing cost burdens can impose a strain on a district's employees, so it is worthwhile for school districts to examine the extent to which their employees face those burdens and how these burdens intersect with potential employee exit. This research brief presents three key takeaways from the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) Employee Housing Survey administered to employees from October 2023 to February 2024. The need for the survey emerged from WCPSS Board of Education member inquiries, feedback from principals, and discussions that the project team held during the summer of 2023 with area superintendents and human resources leadership. The findings suggest that it may be wise for school districts to consider steps to mitigate housing cost burdens for employees, such as partnering with municipalities to identify ways to offer affordable housing to instructional staff (e.g., teachers, instructional assistants) and non-instructional staff (e.g., maintenance staff, bus drivers) who bear the greatest housing cost burdens and who may be more likely to continue working with the district if they lived closer to their worksites. |
